LGC is right to highlight the ever-rising profile of neighbourhood governance (LGC, 28 May).

Enabling communities to participate more fully in managing their area has been a priority for councils over recent years. But with manifesto pledges looming, local government needs to respond to this challenge in a more focused way.

The Local Government Association is hosting a Smith Square debate on 17 June to address how best this can be done. At this event, we will publish the results of LGA research into area decision-making methods and structures.
