The announcement that the balance of funding review will take another 12-18 months is both good and bad news.

But council tax itself is not the problem, and therefore it is encouraging that the council tax baby is not being thrown out with the balance of funding bathwater.

Some of the review's proposals would lead to higher administration costs and an increased tax burden on people and businesses in areas such as Knowsley MBC, where deprivation is a significant factor. It is more important to take the time to get the outcomes right, than to deliver flawed results quickly which could have a detrimental impact on the funding of key local government services.
