The best use for the 'Yorkshire says no' T-shirts mentioned by Toulmin Smith (LGC, 13 August) would be to donate them to the Silver Ring Thing in the US.

This scheme aims to ensure teenagers abstain from sex.

Research has shown the scheme actually increases teenage pregnancy. Maybe this is a lesson for a Yorkshire referendum clearly cancelled because the government knew it wouldn't get the result it wanted.
