I was surprised LGC's feature on postal voting cited the late decision by Parliament to hold the extensive pilots (LGC, 21 May).

Surely nothing could have been printed until after the close of nominations on 11 May. This gave barely two weeks between then and the original date we were told papers would be posted out to voters, which was intended to be around 25 May.

Had any candidates failed to get their nomination papers in by a deadline they would have been rejected, but it seems it is alright for returning officers to send voting papers out late. Many voters have been disenfranchised due to holidays arranged for school half-term. They had expected to vote before going away. Had the original deadline been met, they would not have been excluded.

I do hope Christopher Leslie MP and the Electoral Commission will carry out a full investigation into all the difficulties that have arisen. Many voters have lost confidence in our electoral system. We must learn the lessons from these pilots before any future postal ballots take place.
