Further to LGC's news story 'LGA hits back over neglect claims' (LGC, 13 August), I would like to clarify that the Local Government Association works to represent all of our member authorities.

We always strive to improve our services and maximise the impact of the LGA, and our work on behalf of district councils is no exception.

The LGA is reinforcing its commitment to district members, through sessions which address specific issues such as the spending review.

Our staff will continue to assess the impact of new policies and legislation on districts.

Key district services such as waste management, recycling, environmental protection and licensing are just a few of the areas to which the LGA has dedicated time over the past few months. Last year, the LGA lobbied

to secure an extra£49m for district councils to help ease some of their funding problems.

This is not to say we can be complacent. The LGA will continue to lobby against the disproportionate effect this year's spending review will have on district councils and work to ensure our members are fully represented.

Sir Jeremy Beecham (Lab)

Vice chair, Local Government Association
