Local government minister Nick Raynsford writes about a stark contrast between the Conservatives and Labour on local government (LGC, 11 June).

It was unfortunate for him that his letter was in the same edition as one of the most damning criticisms of comprehensive performance assessment that I have seen.

Somerset CC chief executive Alan Jones's From the Top column, on the practical failings and Kafkaesque world of CPA and the Audit Commission, should be compulsory reading for all those involved in the Audit Commission.

Stark contrast between the Conservatives and Labour on local government? There certainly is. The Conservatives have promised to abolish CPA and best value.

Gordon Keymer

Leader, Tandridge DC
