I read with interest the outcome of the Islington LBC investigation (LGC, 12 January), and was particularly drawn to the report of the Adjudication Panel's comments regarding ethical standards officer Nick Marcar, since some Surrey Heath BC members have also been investigated by him.

Common themes with the Islington case include long delays and weak communication about the progress of the investigations.

Turning to the role of the Standards Board, some reality needs to be injected here from top to bottom. How any chairman can seek to defend an arrangement where officers have no accountability to their manager for their performance is incredible.
