Your efficiency savings table (LGC, 26 May) showed East Sussex CC nearly at the bottom, which misrepresents the facts. The county council has identified up to£13.3m that could count against the annual efficiency statement requirements for 2005-06, which would have put us towards the top.

The government target set was£6.9m so the council chose to complete the return on that basis. In line with the government's regulations, our return reflects ongoing savings from 2004-05, as well as new savings in 2005-06.

Your table only picks up on savings in 2005-06 and implies

a weak performance. If this

had been recognised we

would have been in the middle

of your table.

Sean Nolan

Deputy chief executive and director of corporate resources, East Sussex CC
