Lewisham LBC has taken action to rectify problems after criticism by a racial equality council over racism on a housing estate, the Evening Standard reports (p20).

Lewisham CRE found racial harassment on the Silwood estate, Surrey Quays, close to Millwall football ground to be 'very high'.

Both the council and the police were accused of failing to stamp out the racial violence and harassment, the paper reports.

Watchdogs recorded 138 incidents last year, compared to only 29 logged by police, who were accused of passing off racial attacks as ordinary crimes.

The council was accused of not acting fast enough to move victims to safety.
