Lewisham LBC has spoken out in support of its decision to place a two-year-old foster child in the care of a homosexual couple, removing him from the heterosexual foster couple he has lived with since birth, reported the Daily Telegraph (November 13, p7).

A spokesman for the council told the paper: 'There is no reason why gay people cannot make as good parents as straight people. When a person or couple come forward to ask about potential adoption they undergo an extremely rigorous assessment of their suitability.'

He added that, as in the case in question, it is 'entirely natural' for a fostered child to be placed in more permanent care with a different family.
