The Local Government Association is scrapping 15 policy posts and setting up a£1m fighting fund to pay for academics, think tanks, professional bodies and consultants to help it lead policy debates.

Job losses are expected among the 55 policy staff, although the LGA hopes this will be done voluntarily.

Top figures already commissioned include Ben Page of Mori and LGC columnist Tony Travers of the London School of Economics.

>> Sarah Wood, the LGA's director of economic policy, is leaving in April.
