'Targets for Our Future': A Department for Education and Employment consultation document

The document 'Targets for Our Future', provides a welcome recognition of the complexity of the existing targets and the need to improve their clarity, capacity to be measured and ownership. Consideration of the appropriate national targets will be particularly relevant for local education authorities as they draft their education development plans which must include agreed targets for each school. OECD : Multilateral Agreement on Investment (MAI)

The Association has circulated a DTI background note on the Multilateral Agreement on Investment to member authorities. The agreement is currently being negotiated and is expected to be concluded in April. The Association has asked that local authorities who plan to respond to the Government on this issue also send a copy to the LGA by the beginning of February. Revision of Index of Local Authority Conditions (ILC)

Authorities views are requested on Government proposals for updating the ILC to a 1996 base. The Index is used to inform the targeting of regeneration resources and specifically in calculating the regional allocation of SRB Challenge Fund resources. Responses are requested 6 February.

Improving County-District Working: Proposed amendments to Local Government (Committees and Political Groups) Regulations 1990. The Government is proposing to amend the Local Government (Committees and Political Groups) Regulations 1990 to facilitate partnership working between district and county councils. The amendments principally relate to voting rights of district councillors on certain council committees and vice versa. Authorities views have been requested by 26 January 1998.
