LGA: Cold weather efforts continue

  • Comment
Council leaders say they are doing everything they can to keep roads free from ice and snow and to ensure that people are kept safe during the cold weather.

The Local Government Association says gritting lorries have continued to work round the clock to keep the roads free from ice and snow in affected areas.

Working with the Department of Transport, Cabinet Office, salt suppliers and the Highways Agency, councils as well as the LGA are making sure that the limited salt supplies are being delivered to those areas where stocks are lowest and the weather is harshest.

The LGA says: "Councils will continue to do everything they can to treat as many roads as possible but in some parts of the country will have to prioritise key roads rather than attempt to salt or grit all roads.

"As far as we are aware, there are no councils who have completely run out supplies. There is careful monitoring of the situation to ensure that this continues.

"All local authorities are advised to keep in very close contact with their regional government offices to make sure they have the most up to date information about the situation in their area."
