Sir Brian Briscoe has pledged to remain as chief executive of the Local Government Association - at least until the next general election.

Sir Brian has signed an open-ended permanent contract which will enable him to stay in post beyond next July, which was when his previous fixed term contract was due to expire.

Signing the new deal, he gave a personal commitment to remain at the LGA until the election, which is not expected to take place until 2005.

Sir Brian, who has headed the association since its inception in 1996, said: 'I'm pleased to have the confidence of members, and happy to be continuing my role at the LGA.'
