The Local Government Association Conservative group has been thrown into a leadership battle, days after becoming the LGA's largest party.

Bracknell Forest BC leader Paul Bettison has challenged group leader Peter Chalke, who beat him by 60 votes last year.

Following last year's result, Mr Bettison pledged his support for Mr Chalke, but under Tory group rules the leadership and other senior positions come up for re-election annually.

Sir Sandy Bruce-Lockhart was unopposed as the party's nomination for LGA chair - a position he will take up formally at next month's annual conference.

Bradford MDC leader Margaret Eaton will retain the group deputy leader's post.
