Leader of the Local Government Association's Conservative group, Paul White, led the Essex County Council Tories to a 13 seat gain in the local authority elections last week.

Reported in the East Anglia Daily Times (3 May, p1), the Essex Conservative group took 13 more seats, ousting former leader Chris Pearson and giving them a ten seat majority over Labour's 33. Labour lost one seat and the Liberal Democrat group slid from 30 seats to 20, so the council has no overall control.

Mr White, who predicted widespread Tory gains in the local authority elections, said he was 'thrilled'. The council's new leader will be Paul Smith.

Former leader, Labour's Chris Pearson, has recently been in high-profile clashes with the county's striking firefighters.
