LGA planning experts met with minister Nick Raynsford this week - to urge the government to free up planning laws so local authorities can provide

much-needed low cost housing.

The LGA and DETR agreed to work closely to improve the planning process, and to increase resources to planning services.

Keith House, chair of the LGA's planning executive, said: 'Local authorities are currently restricted in their ability to provide affordable housing because the existing planning system places certain obstacles in our path, such as the thresholds below which authorities cannot ask for an element of affordable housing.

'We hope a closer working relationship with the DETR will help us iron out these difficulties, and make the vital provision of low-cost housing easier to attain.'

NOTE: Keith House is also Liberal Democrat Leader of Eastleigh Borough Council.
