LGA transport chiefs have welcomed the announcement by the government of nearly£100m for rural bus services (see LGCnet 29/2/00).

This will be transmitted through the Rural Bus Subsidy Grant (RBSG) for three more years beyond 2000-1, at its present£32.5m-a-year level.

Cllr Ros Scott, vice-chair of the LGA's transport executive, said: 'We are pleased that the government is recognising the importance of rural bus services as a vital link for many communities.

'We believe local authorities can play a crucial role in helping to deliver a high standard of local transportation.

'But we do need the financial power to do so. Today's announcement certainly sends the right signal.'
