Nottingham City Council director of social services Paul Snell is acting chief executive while a replacement is found. John Jackson left after 13 months in the post earlier this month (LGC, 2 August).

More and more people own the houses they live in, continuing a 20-year growth trend. The survey of English housing, carried out for the ODPM by the National Centre for Social Research, revealed that 70% of households in England own the property they live in.
