Crawley BC is seeking to reassure people that deadly mosquitoes cannot survive the English climate long enough to fly from aircraft and bite someone. The reassurances came after reports in the local press claimed the mosquitoes posed a danger to the public.

Short allegations

Congleton BC has asked police to investigate written allegations against its leader Linda Short and elected member Malcolm Short.

An investigation using the national code on local government conduct is also planned and will be carried out by an independent person.

The Greater London Assembly has summoned Dome minister Lord Faulkner to a select committee-style hearing into the Dome's future after proposed buyer Nomura pulled out.

Steak out

The EU has ordered Llanelli Rural Council to destroy more than 50,000 tins of steak which had been intended for people living on family credit and disability allowance in south west Wales. The meat had been stored in a warehouse for more than two years and was about to pass its sell-by date. It was originally shipped to Wales as part of a European food scheme.

Councils are being urged to use children under 16 to trap newsagents selling cigarettes to youngsters. The teenagers will help councils provide evidence in court.

Redcar & Cleveland BC is launching a crackdown on inconsiderate motorists who are making life hell for lollipop ladies. The 98 staff make at least two complaints a week.
