The Association of County Council Chief Executives has appointed a new chairwoman. East Sussex County Council chief executive Cheryl Miller is the first woman to head the association, and at 45 she is believed to be the youngest.

Yellow letter day

Islington LBC and the district auditor are to launch investigations into allegations of political propaganda levelled against the council's Liberal Democrats. The allegations relate to a letter on tax cuts, written by the Lib Dems, included in council tax bills without being seen by the chief executive.

The Office for National Statistics has released figures indicating the electorate for local government rose 63,590 between 1999 and 2000 to a total of 44,755,889.
