We have made a good start with our first performance plan and member-led reviews, but best value must be more than a well-run process. We need to translate action plans into tangible improvements and engage staff more fully, without burying them in paperwork.
Do you think the inspection process could be improved?
It does concern me that few authorities are being awarded more than a single star. Unless best value recognises existing hard work and achievements, many staff may start to ask why they should bother.
What have been the high and low points of your career?
The last 18 months at South Bucks have been very good. I enjoy a challenge, and trying to make best value manageable and meaningful is certainly that. As for low points, some projects and working relationships have been more fruitful than others.
When did you personally receive the worst value?
Moving house. I'm sure some estate agents are very helpful, but I haven't met them yet.
Who would you most like to go for a drink with, and why?
I'd like to take my wife to a country pub, if only we could find a babysitter.
What makes you angry?
Injustice. At work I aspire to 'zero intolerance' but fail miserably when it comes to problems with my computer.
When and where are you happiest?
At home with my wife and two kids at the weekends.
