A 20% growth in membership is one of the achievements highlighted in the Local Government Information Unit's 1996 annual report.

The report picks out the unit's successes over the year including:

-- offering new services to members, such as training

-- publishing innovative policy proposals, such as the Unit's Manifesto for Local Government

-- leading the field with practical advice on issues such as CCTV and the Disability Discrimination Act

The report includes the views of some of the people with whom the LGIU has worked during the year, including councillors, a journalist, a leading academic, a senior police officer and a leading trade unionist.

It also looks forward to 1997, outlining the broad themes of the unit's work programme up to the general election and beyond.
