Employment secretary Michael Portillo has attacked waste in Liberal Democrat-controlled councils in the south west, in an interview in the Western Morning News (p1).

But the Devon CC say he has got his facts seriously wrong.

Portillo singles our Cornwall CC for running a gay and lesbian helpline on the council education budget, and Devon CC for spending £1,200 per delegate on a head teachers conference.

The council refutes the criticism saying the gay helpline is run by volunteers, and the cost of the teachers conference was £1,200 in total.

The employment secretary concludes in his interview:

'In the west country we will emphasise that Liberal Democrats are known for their high spending and bureaucracy and even their hypocrisy.'
