The leader of the Liberal Democrats on the new Cardiff City Council has written to shadow Welsh secretary Ron Davies asking him to persuade members of the authority to forego large allowance increases in the face of higher council tax bills and cuts in services.

The Western Mail reports (p2) that Jenny Randerson claims that leaders of the leading members of the Labour administration will be awarded a total of £200,000 in special responsibility allowances in addition to their basic allowance of £6,000 each.

'The total allowance for councillors in the new council will be of the order of £500,000. This is at least £200,000 more than the current bill for both Cardiff City and South Glamorgan added together. So we have half the number of councillors for nearly twice the price,' she said. Larger allowances for councillors means less money for services.
