Don Foster, the Liberal Democrat's environment and transport spokesman, is the latest MP to say he would resign from the commons to become mayor of his home city, reports the Financial Times (p2).

'If we were to have the mayor option [in Bath and NE Somerset] it is a job that would certainly interest me,' he said yesterday.

Recently, several MPs have expressed an interest in giving up Westminster for local politics.

They include Jeff Rooker, the social security minister, who is a possible candidate for mayor of Birmingham, and Peter Kilfoyle, the former defence minister, who may stand to become mayor of Liverpool.
