Alastair Loraine wrote to local newspapers saying: 'Perhaps the only way King's Cross will lose its drunks and vagrants is by a comprehensive and long-overdue redevelopment of the area - or by issuing a bullet for each resident.'
He also attacked the presence in King's Cross of the Big Issue's offices and a Hare Krishna mobile kitchen.
Derek Sawyer, Islington's Labour leader, said: 'Councillor Loraine has revealed himself to be an extremist intent on whipping up hatred and fear. He should resign.'
'I intend to put right any harm I have caused. I will start by offering my active support to those organisations working to improve the lives of homeless people.'
