Liberal Democrat MP Chris Davies welcomed a report today by homelessness charity St Mungo's which highlights the effect perceptions of homelessness have on tourism.

The report shows one in six tourists say their trip to London was spoilt by the sight of homeless people on the streets and 75% said it was unacceptable that people were sleeping rough.

Mr Davies said: 'This excellent report shows that London's homelessness problem is nothing short of a national disgrace. The government ought to be ashamed that two out of every five tourists think homelessness is worse in London than in their own capital cities.

'The Liberal Democrats have repeatedly argued that the government should allow local authorities to invest receipts from council house sales in tackling the homelessness problem.

'Now this report has shown the economic effect homelessness could have on our tourist industry, they must heed our calls.'
