Liberal Democrats at Hackney LBC are accusing the Labour Party of playing dirty tricks with a 'joke' application for Conservative membership on the part of a by-election candidate.

Labour circulated copies of an application form to join the Tories in the name of Steven Laing, the Liberal Democrat candidate in next week's by-election.

Labour candidate Samantha Lloyd said: 'Here is someone trying to become a Lib Dem councillor when he's only just applied to join the Tories.'

But Mr Laing said Labour was engaging in 'petty scaremongering' by misusing an application he filled in during a 'high-spirited' evening at the town hall a couple of months ago.

He threatened to seek legal advice if more allegations are made.
