The Liberal Democrats hope to gain up to 100 seats and capture Wokingham DC, Stratford-on-Avon DC and Tunbridge Wells DC in next month's local elections.

In its coverage of yesterday's launch of the party's local election campaign, the Financial Times (p10) reports that the Lib Dems are also confident of making further gains in traditional Tory territory, as well as winning seats in Labour urban strongholds such as Sheffield.

The Guardian (p10) describes a 'deliberately low-key estimate' by the party of its prospects. Other targets such as Runnymede and Huntingdon may slip into 'no overall control' status.

The Independent reports (p7) that Lib Dem leader Paddy Ashdown brushed aside the idea that he might be squeezed by Tony Blair's move to claim Labour as a party of the centre'.
