The Labour party will back measures to deal with the erection of telecommunication masts, reports the East Anglian Daily Times (p5).

Planning spokesman Keith Vaz visited Essex yesterday to assess the effect of such structures on the landscape.

Last week Liberal Democrat environment spokesman Matthew Taylor said he would set down an Early Day Motion on the matter.

Colchester BC planning and transportation committee chairman George Williams, who accompanied Mr Vaz, told the paper:

'He said he would gladly support the Early Day Motion and was keen to put one through from the Labour party supporting a review of planning policy. I was very pleased with his reaction and he seemed to show unequivocal support for preventing the masts from ruining our countryside.

'I think he was aware of the possibility of a terrible scourge of masts appearing in the are. He seemed quite appalled by the arm it would do to the landscape.'
