Essex CC's LibDem-Labour controlled education committee has reversed council policy by letting schools admit children before the term in which they become five, the East Anglian Daily Times reports.

Councillors have also agreed to phase in an extra £8m for reception- aged children and a further £3m for training and equipment. The decision is in line with the council's pledge to extend nursery education.

Last year the then Conservative-controlled council spent only £11m on nursery education, compared to £24m recommended by the government.
