The Liberal Party is campaigning to persuade local authorities to boycott the government's identity cards plan.

Chair Rob Wheway has written to the party's councillors, who sit on 18 councils, asking them to propose that their authority prohibits officials from asking for the new cards as proof of identity.

'If the large majority of councils refuse to co-operate it will blow a hole in the government's plans. Many councillors of all parties oppose the threat to our long- standing freedom posed by ID cards,' said Mr Wheway.

The party is also calling on voluntary organisations to boycott the cards.

The Liberal Party remained a separate organisation after other members merged with the SDP in 1988.
