Supermarket chain Asda is writing to councils asking them to relax Sunday opening hours on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

Shops are only allowed to open for six hours from 10am. Asda wants to open some stores earlier, while sticking to the six-hour rule.

'It will be up to individual councils to decide on opening times' said a spokeswoman for the Local Government Association.

A spokeswoman at Brent LBC town hall, which is directly opposite the biggest Asda in London, said the store would have to seek planning permission.
