Lincolnshire CC is to launch an investigation after it had to pay£2.8 million for staff sick leave last year.

Nearly 100,000 days were lost through sick leave for during 1997-98, with 825 people taking more than a month off at a time.

A report revealed three out of four of the long-term sickness cases involved staff in the social services department.

The figures are to be discussed by the finance and resources committee. Chairman Martin Hill said: 'We want improvements. We need to make sure people are not taking time off without good reason. The fact is£2.8 million is a lot of money which could be better spent.'
