The beleaguered Conservative group in control of Lincolnshire CC has agreed to include opposition and independent councillors on its standards committee after protests over its single-party nature.

The ruling group caved in after it was criticised by the Standards Board for England which asked for a formal response on how it thought the committee could 'command the respect of the authority as a whole'.

Three Tories, one Labour, one Liberal Democrat, one independent and two members of the public will sit on the newly constituted committee.

The council is awaiting publication of a report arising from investigations by the district auditor into payments to a private company, severance payments and staff appointments.

The report is expected to criticise the council's culture of decision making.

Police are investigating leader Jim Speechley over his involvement in decisions concerning a local bypass scheme.
