Liverpool City Council has closed one of its schools and suspended the head teacher after complaints about truancy and violence by pupils.

A team has been sent into Wheathill School in the Belle Vale area of the city and Mike Cording, the school's head, was suspended pending the outcome of an investigation into the running of the school, reports The Independent (p9).

The move followed a two-day investigation by a team appointed by the city council. Council leaders concluded they were 'unable to guarantee the welfare of pupils and staff'.

Paul Clein, chairman of the authority's education committee, said he hoped the school would re-open next week with a senior inspector in place as head teacher. 'We have closed the school for a week as a temporary measure. This is standard procedure in such cases, as is the suspension of the head teacher,' he said.

'We will now have a series of meetings between teachers and LEA officers to determine where we go from here. It is our duty to protect the welfare of pupils and staff and obviously we also have a duty to supply education and we are conscious that there is a continuance of education for the pupils of this school.'
