Writs have been issued against Liverpool City Council and two other organisations alleging sexual abuse by care workers in five homes over a period of 30 years.

More than 100 abuse victims are involved in the claim, which follows the jailing of 10 men for paedophile offences in homes in the Cheshire and Merseyside areas.

An investigation by a team of 20 detectives concentrating on 15 homes has been under way since last year. It followed allegations by former residents that children in care were systematically moved from home to home and abused.

Investigators tried to trace more than 3,000 people who had passed through the homes to gather evidence for the pending case.

The writs were issued in the High Court in Manchester last week. Liverpool managed two of the homes and the Nugent Care Society and NCH Action for Children the others.
