Westminster LBC could face a legal challenge after refusing to allow the birth mothers of adopted children any information on their sons or daughters.

The Birmingham Post reported (2 July, p8) that adoptive lobby group, the North London Natural Parents Group, is taking legal advice and is planning to challenge Westminster's decision to implement a no-contact policy and to refuse to act as an intermediary between mothers and children.

Councils across the country have adopted policies of acting as intermediaries, offering counselling and arranging contact bewteen both parties, or at least giving 'essential' information. But social services chiefs at Westminster will not even let mothers know if their children are alive, the paper reports.

Many of its 25,000 files date back to the forties and fifties - a time when single mothers were under extreme pressure to offer their children up for adoption, it says.
