The local authorities borrowing requirement (LABR) is provisionally estimated to have been minus£0.3bn in January (ie a net repayment), compared with a net repayment of£0.9bn in the same period last year.

The LABR for the first ten months of 1996-7 was minus£0.1bn, compared with minus£0.3bn (ie a net repayment) for the same period last year.

Provisional estimates of the public sector borrowing requirement (PSBR) show that:

PSBR in January 1997 was minus£5.8bn (ie a net repayment).

PSBR for the first ten months of 1996-7 was£10.3bn compared with£19.3bn in 1995-6.

December's PSBR and CGBR have been revised upwards by£0.1bn, the PSBR from£2.1bn to£2.2bn, and the CGBR from£1.8bn to£1.9bn.
