Amid the national election fever, the Daily Telegraph (p2) profiles the 55 local authority elections that took place yesterday.

Counting takes place today in the local contests, in which the Conservatives are hoping to retrieve lost ground and win back some shires.

The 33 county council elections included one new county, Worcestershire. There were also elections for 19 new unitary authorities at Blackburn, Blackpool, Bracknell Forest, Halton, Herefordshire, Medway Towns, Newbury, Nottingham, Peterborough, Plymouth, Reading, Slough, Southend-on-Sea, Thurrock, Torbay, Warrington, Windsor and Maidenhead Royal, Wokingham and the Wrekin.

Two established unitary authorities- Bristol and Kingston-Upon-Hull had elections, as did Malvern Hills, a non-metropolitan district where there has been a boundary change.
