The Electoral Commission will investigate security surrounding the new methods of voting piloted at today's council elections.

A government pilot scheme introduced postal-only ballots in 10 areas at this weeks' local elections. But following news that West Yorkshire police are investigating several allegations of election fraud in Bradford and Wakefield involving postal ballots, the commission has announced two separate inquiries will be carried out.

The commission will carry out an absent voting review at the end of the year which will look at postal voting, and there will be a general review of the pilot schemes in the coming months.

A commission spokeswoman said: 'The new methods need to be fully looked at to see whether they are safe.'
