Stuart Drummond, who, as monkey mascot Hangus, was elected mayor of

Hartlepool, said he would take the job seriously. 'Originally it was a

joke', he told BBC Radio Four's Today programme, 'but we've got a lot of serious policies'.

But Liberal Democrat MP Simon Hughes commented on the Hartlepool result: 'We

were against the idea of directly elected mayors because we thought they

allowed for gimmicks and superficial characters to succeed and we were

clearly proved right'.

Labour party chairman Charles Clarke also said Mr Drummond's win 'ridicules

the whole system'.
