An invitation to Midland councils to join the Local Government Association is reported in The Birmingham Post (p4). Councils are being asked to say if they want to join by the end of October.

In a joint statement, the leaders of the three present local body associations said:

'We have sought to deal with a complex situation in the best interests of local government and we believe the steps outlined are the right way forward.

'We warmly commend them to our membership in England and Wales. If the proposals are supported by them we are confident that local government will have a more powerful voice nationally.'
