Senior local government officials are cited amongst workers who are likely to witness a reduction in their working week to 48 hours as a result of the working time directive, according to Unison.

The Independent reports (p5) that thousands of part time public sector workers should benefit from an entitlement to paid holiday.

Rodney Bickerstaffe, general secretary of Unison, said that cleaners and dinner ladies would be amongst the beneficiaries of yesterday's European court ruling. He added: 'We will be vigilant in making sure that the directive is implemented properly and on time'.
