Scottish local government continues to lead the field for lower paid workers in Scotland, says Cosla.

With lower paid council staff in Scotland breaking through the 'magic fiver' rate for the first time ever, Cosla president Pat Watters said: 'Scottish local government continues to lead the field for lower paid workers in Scotland.'

Mr Watters, who was chair of the management side that secured the ground breaking deal with the trade unions, went on to say: 'As the president of Cosla I have to put on record my thanks to the dedicated staff who provide vital services to our communities day in and day out.

'They are a vital cog in the local government wheel, doing a great deal of hard work and I am very pleased that this pay deal has been welcomed by our employees and our trade union colleagues.

'This is a deal which has brought stability to pay-bargaining in Scottish local government at the same time demonstrating how much we both value and need the services our employees provide and that is why Cosla took the conscious decision to weight this part of the four year pay deal towards the lower paid workers in local government.'
