A local inquiry is to be held by the Boundary Commission into their provisional recommendations, made under the European Parliamentary Elections Act 1978 (as amended), for European Parliamentary Constituencies of South Wales Central and South Wales West.

The commission published their proposals on 11 April 1996, recommending that the Vale of Glamorgan Westminster constituency should be transferred from the South Wales Central EPC to the South Wales West EPC in order to reduce the disparity in the electorates.

Objections made about those proposals have caused the Commission to decide to hold a local inquiry. Official notice of the inquiry, will be published in newspapers on 12 September 1996.

The inquiry will be held in public and any, interested person, whether a supporter of or objector to the commission's proposals may attend and be heard. The commission would urge all interested parties to attend and make their views known. It should not be assumed that the inquiry will only, discuss those matters raised in representations submitted within the period allowed nor that the commission's provisional recommendations will remain unchanged.

Following consideration of the evidence submitted at an inquiry, and the assistant commissioner's report, the commission may revise their provisional recommendations. While the commission will always invite written representations in respect of any revised recommendations they might publish, all interested parties should be aware that they may not be able to state their case at a further inquiry, as a further inquiry will only rarely be held.

The inquiry will be conducted by the assistant commissioner, Alun Kynric Lewis QC. It will open on:- Tuesday 22 October 1996 at 10.30am in the council chamber, County Hall, Atlantic Wharf, Cardiff.

Representations made in respect of the Mid and West Wales, North Wales, and South Wales East European Parliamentary Constituencies did not require a local inquiry to be held and the Commission decided not to use their discretion to hold an inquiry.

Should you require any further information concerning the inquiry or about any other aspect of the commission's work please write to:

The Secretary, Boundary Commission for Wales Room 719, St Catherines House 10 Kingsway, London, WC2B 6JP or telephone 0171 396 2179 or 2071 Fax messages 0171 396 2253.
