Labour-run Gateshead MBC has been accused of a 'lock-out on democracy' over plans to streamline decision-making, the Northern Echo reported yesterday (p7).

Gateshead is due to replace its traditional committee structure with a cabinet-style management system of 11 councillors. The cabinet would not be open to the public, press or councillors who are not members of the new group, the paper reports.

Liberal Democrats have reacted in fury, with Opposition Leader Noel Rippeth saying: 'this Labour lock-out is a staggering attack on democracy'.

Labour council leader George Gill said it was in line with government recommendations to modernise local government and would 'cut bureaucracy'.
