The row between London boroughs and the government over whether they should repay nearly £100m in housing interest debts inherited from the GLC is to be decided by the House of Lords, the Evening Standard reports (p22).

Refused leave by the Court of Appeal in July to take their case further, the boroughs petitioned the Law Lords, who have agreed to hear it in February.

Twenty-two boroughs are supposed to owe housing grant aid money paid to them by the Department of the Environment in interest on nearly £200m borrowed by the GLC some 20 years ago.
