The Association of London Government has warmly welcomed today's announcement that the British Athletics Federation is backing Wembley as the site for a new national stadium and the news that football organisations are likely to follow suit.
ALG arts & leisure chair Bob Harris said:
'This is extremely good news. The ALG and the London boroughs have been actively involved in promoting the Wembley bid, in the firm belief that it makes sense for the national stadium to be sited in the capital for the benefit and status of the nation and for the convenience of visitors from both home and abroad.
'I am delighted that the major football and athletics organisation are now adding their influential voices to the call for the new stadium to be located at Wembley. I do hope that the Sports Council will make its final decision - already a year overdue - very soon so that work can go ahead. With a new national stadium at Wembley, this country will be well placed to submit very strong bids to host the 2001 World Athletics Championships, 2006 Football World Cup and the 2008 Olympic Games.'
